The Trump phenomenon's most illuminating and characteristic occasions – not its most crucial, nor most brutal, nor most hazardous, nor stupidest, but possibly its most revealing – emerged earlier this harvest season. During the period of multiple weeks, the US president commenced revealing the public his intentions for a lavish reception room twice the size compared to the White House and then commenced unilaterally ripping down the East Wing to build it.
He has committed acts ten thousand times worse – the existing assessment of fatalities resulting from his reductions to international aid stands at 600,000 and increasing, and this week research forecast his energy policies would kill 1.3 million more. But nothing as definitional. No other president would have attempted – genuinely, no other president would have contemplated – unilaterally destroying significant portions of the executive mansion in order to erect a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the direct cooperation of numerous America's wealthiest, almost all of whom conduct transactions with public institutions.

As disorienting as it is to observe the president attempt to overturn the old idea of democracy and substitute it with its polar opposite, there exists a significant segment among Americans who wouldn't consider it totally unfamiliar. That encompasses people such as ourselves – within elder demographics close to half – who were brought up as mainline Protestant Christians.
We have watched over the years while conservative evangelical congregations transformed the Christ we learned about into the total contrary of our perception of his character. Essentially, they transformed an image of compassion into a symbol of hate who blesses specifically the brutality that he condemned in biblical teachings; this transformation occurred more slowly, through multiple decades as opposed to months, but it is nonetheless disturbing through similar means, a bewildering emotional blow for many of us.
A Harmful Christianity Establishes Itself
Hence I shall explain the Jesus from my childhood, because theoretically Jesus is the center of Christian religion, and since the fastest-growing cadre of Americans might have little sense of him as they consider themselves atheists or agnostics or spiritual independents. I take no issue with these various perspectives, nor with alternative spiritual paths; but I do think that there are pearls of significant worth in biblical accounts.
It is decidedly definitely not the narrative of an authoritative monarch appearing; instead, a child comes into the world to displaced parents in a garage, who are forced to hastily depart to a different country to avoid secret police. The infant develops in simple surroundings, an employed craftsman; his message focuses on affection for others, particularly for the impoverished – not simply tender feelings, but practical compassion, expressed by feeding and housing. Jesus' answer to violence is to present the opposite cheek – not as a demonstration of passive acceptance, but as a method to educate the attacker; his approach to wrongdoing indicates that whenever an individual takes your jacket you must offer them your pullover too.
The obvious and straightforward reality that Christ in biblical accounts requests a type of radical love focused on the impoverished has consistently rendered the Christian faith something of a provocative belief system: appealing to the masses, but owing to its intrinsic extremism demanding to be restrained. In the 1950s it was controlled via weakening – Protestant Christianity was so widespread that it essentially sanctified existing conditions.
A Struggle for the Best of Us
Hence I have become inspired to witness the steadfast resistance to Trump arise over the last twelve months. It has served as great solace to participate in developing the initiative that has demonstrated publicly in rally after rally, and seems to have inspired electorate to turn out in significant amounts in interim political contests. We must have to persist with it, and in the same spirit, with American flags at every demonstration and requests to the highest qualities within national heritage.
We shall be interrogated ... how did you receive the foreigner? Did you accept these individuals and embrace them or not?
The nation is most protected, in other words, through connection to the best within national tradition, just as Christianity is optimally secured by relationship to what makes it unique and beautiful, particularly the pattern of the Savior. In all circumstances does it imply acting as if the most negative about the nation and Christian faith did not happen; it means both meekness and conviction, a combination that serious US believers should be comfortable with.
